How to Select the Right Toothpaste

ASK:

Doc I wanted to ask about how to choose the right toothpaste. For best results, what are the criteria in choosing a toothpaste? Which is better, toothpastes contain detergents or detergent-free? Whether at any stage of age must use a different toothpaste?

Chandra (36), Ciledug

ANSWER:

Thank you for the question. According to research, toothpaste has an important role in removing dental plaque. Some of the main content of which should be available toothpaste is abrasive material that serves to remove plaque and staining on the teeth, and fluoride which works to restore the lost tooth mineral (remineralization).

While the content of other important antibacterial agents such as triclosan, as well as other agents such as calcium phosphate remineralization. The content of detergents in toothpaste only give effect to the toothpaste foam. The most popular detergent used is Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), but was reported to cause canker sores in the mouth.

Toothpaste used for children and adults differently. The difference lies in its fluoride content. Toothpaste is safe for children as much as 250-500 ppm fluoride, the record should not be swallowed by children. While for adults the maximum fluoride content is 1000 ppm. To produce an optimal dental health, use of toothpaste should be supported by proper brushing techniques and the right time.
